Lana was interviewed by Cosmopolitan and she talked about the relationship between Regina & Zelena, what to expect from the upcoming episode and if she thinks Regina will be ready for a new love interest. You can read the interview below!
The heroes of Storybrooke have spent the last few seasons of Once Upon a Time dealing with people from other realms — Neverland, Arendelle, and Camelot, for example — but this year the conflict is a little more homegrown. After Regina split herself from the Evil Queen side of her persona in the season-five finale, it seemed like she might finally get a little peace, but of course the Queen rematerialized and returned to Storybrooke to wreak havoc. Lana Parrilla, who plays both the Queen and her better half (and gets the absolute best outfits on Once), recently talked to Cosmopolitan.com about the upcoming episode “Strange Case” and just how heavy those fabulous dresses are. All glamour comes with a price!
Last week, Regina tried to bribe Mr. Hyde only to find that the Evil Queen had already gotten to him. Do you think Regina has kind of lost her edge now that she’s excised her evil half?
She just has to be a bit smarter, kind of ahead of the curve a bit. The Evil Queen has an upper hand. She is a great manipulator, and Regina has to start tapping into that part of herself that used to think that way. I’m just thinking of that scene, and I remember playing it as Regina seeing Mr. Hyde sitting there eating the steak and having a Chianti. It’s really comical. I think that also says a lot about the Evil Queen. She’s funny! There’s a humor to her and it’s charming. At least I think it is.
Do you think Regina will be willing to go dark again to defeat the Queen?
I don’t think so. I think Regina’s going to do her best to stay on the heroic path and find ways to beat the Evil Queen and Hyde, maybe using light magic or figuring out a new way to defeat them. In this coming episode on Sunday, she’s assisting Dr. Jekyll — he’s coming up with a serum that can take out Mr. Hyde and the Evil Queen. She’s concerned about the potential inner darkness that can grow inside of her again, but I think right now her focus is, “How do we take these two out?” She can control her own inner darkness probably a lot easier if the Evil Queen is nonexistent
When the season started we saw Zelena and Regina as roommates, but the Evil Queen has already thrown a wrench in their relationship. What can you say about how their relationship will progress as the season goes on?
Zelena and Regina have a long way to go. The Evil Queen and Zelena at this stage probably have more of a chance of partnering up. I don’t know if Zelena has completely crossed over to join the hero side. Zelena still is deliciously wicked. I think she’s still on the fence and seeing what her options are, and this is a decision that’s going to take some time. In the interim, the Evil Queen is loving that she has a sister. They have some journeys to go on together. I don’t want to spoil anything, but there are some fun scenes coming up with those two women.
This season you have to act against yourself, Orphan Black–style. How do you differentiate between Regina and the Evil Queen when you’re playing both at once?
The best way for me to start is to really just break up the two arcs and treat them as separate characters. If I’m working on Regina, even in the scenes with the Evil Queen, I just focus on Regina, and then when I do my Evil Queen arc I just focus on playing the Evil Queen. They’re two different women, but they’re like the yin and yang, the light and dark, so there are some similarities still. I try to give them different voices; I try to give them different body language. It helps me keep them separate.
After Robin Hood’s death, how soon do you think Regina will move on romantically, if she moves on at all?
I don’t foresee Regina moving on with another man right now. She’s just probably going to focus on her relationship with Henry, her relationship with her family, and dealing with Zelena at some point. Right now I think romance is the last thing on her mind. But we’ll see what happens when Robin Hood comes back! All that may change.
How long does it take you to get in full Evil Queen regalia?
It takes about three hours. There’s a lot that goes into it with changing my skin tone completely, and then putting the beautiful, elaborate makeup on my face. We really spend a lot of time on the eyes and the hair. The hair and makeup probably takes about two and a half hours, and then getting dressed is like another 30 minutes. So yeah, it’s a production.
How heavy are the dresses?
It depends. If I’m wearing pants and those coats, they’re a bit lighter. When I’m in those gowns, you have all those jewels and the very stiff collar — that’s heavy. It’s like a workout. I need to soak every night at the end of my Evil Queen days.
